Paris
Poem by Louise Michel – in French and English

Paris
English translation
Let the kings fall, let the winds blow,
And the torments,
Fall, fall beneath the black hurricanes.
You who go traveling across the world,
Traveler, pass on your way,
Paris is the deep grave,
Paris is the human charnel house.
Everything is dead in the great city,
And yet it is up to you, Paris,
Up to you to defend your sons
From the cowardly and servile crowd.
Yes, we are the multitude
Whose sons go to the slaughterhouse,
Flocks of kings, such is the habit,
And the daughters are on the pavement.
Follow, if there are proud and brave hearts,
O people, among your children,
The executioner takes the most valiant
If they have refused to be slaves.
Specters, leave your empty houses,
Come before the victors,
At last upon your livid lips
Terrors must have vanished.
Repeat to them in all your death rattles
That your chosen ones were grand,
And to defend your children,
Raise the sepulchral stones.

Paris
In original French
Laissez tomber les rois laissez souffler les vents,
Et les torments,
Tomber tomber sous les noirs ouragans.
Toi qui vas parcourant le monde
Voyageur passe ton chemin
Spectres quittez vos maisons vides
Venez devant les vainqueurs,
Enfin sur vos lèvres livides,
Ont dû s’effacer les terreurs.
Répétez leur dans tous vos râles
Que vos élus ont été grands
Et pour défendre vos enfants
Levez les pierres sépulcrales.
