The Swallows

In English

Swallow coming from the stormy cloud,
Faithful swallow, where are you going? Tell me.
What breeze carries you off, wandering traveler?
Listen, I would like to go away with you,
Far, far from here, toward immense shores,
Toward great bare rocks, strands, deserts,
Into the silent unknown, or else toward other ages,
Toward the wandering stars that roll through the air.
Ah! Let me weep, weep, when with your wings
You skim the green grass, and to the deep concerts
Of the forests and winds you answer from the turrets,
With your husky voice, my sweet sea bird.
Black-eyed swallow, swallow, I love you!
I know not what echo is brought to me by you
From distant shores; to live, supreme law,
I need, like you, air and liberty.

Louise Michel, April 1861

Les Hirondelles

In original French

Hirondelle qui vient de la nue orageuse
Hirondelle fidèle, où vas-tu ? dis-le-moi.
Quelle brise t’emporte, errante voyageuse ?

Bien loin, bien loin d’ici, vers d’immenses rivages,

Louise Michel, avril 1861
