Fashion During the Paris Commune

Auguste Raffet was an illustrator who created a series of colour plates of the clothing worn by the people of Paris during the Paris Commune. From his more than one hundred illustrations, we see that the uniforms and fashion worn by the Parisians during this time was a fascinating individual form of expression and belonging. Often recycled, colourful and unashamedly political, Raffet’s accompanying observations of the individuals he painted combined with his artworks to create a fascinating portrait of a city in flux.
