In the Polar Oceans

In English

The snow falls, the wave rolls,
The air is frozen, the sky is black,
The ship creaks beneath the swell
And morning merges into evening.

Forming a heavy round dance,
The sailors dance as they sing;
Like an organ with a thundering voice,
The wind blows through the sails.

For fear that the cold might overcome them,
They sing to the frozen pole
An air from the moors of Brittany,
An old bardic chant of times gone by.

And the sound of the wind in the sails,
This tune so simple and so old,
The snow, the starless sky,
Fill the eyes with tears.

Is this tune a magic song,
To touch the heart so deeply?
No, it is a breath of Armorica,
All filled with blooming broom.

And it is the wind of the polar seas,
Thundering through its brass horns
The new popular bardic chants
Of tomorrow’s legend.

Dans les mers polaires

Les marins dansent en chantant ;
